Overview
Updated floodplain mapping for the Algonquin Road watershed was approved for use at November 13, 2025, meeting of the General Board of Conservation Sudbury. As of November 14, 2025 the new floodplain mapping is in effect. This new floodplain mapping results from a recent study commissioned by the City of Greater Sudbury (CGS).
The last mapping study in this area was conducted over 20 years ago. Since then, new technology and scientific methods have improved the precision of measurement, data collection and interpretation. The new results provide greater clarity, accuracy and consistency for use in making planning and permitting decisions related to development.
This type of work for conservation authorities is required by provincial law and continues elsewhere in Greater Sudbury where mapping is either lacking or out of date.
Floodplain mapping is an important tool for the public good. It takes a cautious approach that applies to a flooding disaster scenario. Accurate mapping contributes to public safety, mitigates damage or loss of property, helps focus emergency response and builds resilience.
